Lee M. “Leebo” McLaughlin, Jr. was “born and bred” at Camp Maxwelton. Our “Camp Dad,” and the ultimate Maxwelton Gentleman, he, with his wife, Nancy, carries on the legacy of his parents, the late Rosa and Lee “Knubby” McLaughlin, founders of Camp Maxwelton and Camp Lachlan. A native of Lexington, VA, Leebo graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA, where he was head monitor, and the University of North Carolina, where he was a Morehead Scholar. He also holds a Masters in Educational Administration and Supervision from the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. An example of strength, honor, integrity, patience, faithfulness, humility, and love to generations of campers and counselors, Leebo leads Maxwelton devotions and oversees all aspects of Camp life. In addition to managing the daily administrative duties and staff, he makes time to be in the crafts shop and shoot skeet with the campers and counselors whenever possible. He is famous for his masterful bugle blowing, sensational storytelling, and epic bonfires. In the “off season,” Leebo enjoyed a four-decade career in education as a teacher at EHS (Alexandria), Durham Academy, Virginia Episcopal School, Maury River Middle School, and Rockbridge County High School, where he was head of the Science Department. Since retiring in 2018, he has enjoyed the extra time to devote to tending to Maxwelton Farm and to Glenfiddich, where he and Nancy reside during the school year, just down the road from Camp. He also enjoys gardening, helping Nancy with her daffodils, hunting, shooting, reading, hiking, riding and traveling with Nancy, and spending time with his three children, Beezie, Lee, and Lockwood, his son-in-law, Hanley, and his seven grandchildren, Hanley IV, Mac, Mamie, Leeboy, Posy, Margaret Dabney, and Cooper.
Nancy McLaughlin is a life-long Camp Lachlan camper and counselor, and our beloved “Camp Mom.” A native of Charlottesville, VA, Nancy graduated from St. Anne’s-Belfield and Salem College. She first attended Camp Lachlan at nine years old and hasn’t missed a summer since! Adored by generations of campers and counselors, Nancy, the ultimate Lachlan Lady, is a renowned example of grace, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, humility, and unconditional love. An immediate friend to new little ones, and always ready to welcome fresh faces into the fold, Nancy has checked-on, hugged, encouraged, and cheerfully distracted more first-year campers than we can count. Just imagine what a mother of one does each day and multiply by 100! Along with the countless “mom jobs” and administrative duties that her daily life at Camp requires, Nancy leads the Lachlan devotions and manages the horses and the riding program, spending as much time at the barn as possible. A lifelong horsewoman, Nancy grew up riding with Ellie Wood Baxter in Charlottesville, VA, and spent many years fox hunting with Farmington and the Rockbridge Hunt Club. During the school year, Nancy enjoys a love of gardening and is a National Garden Club Society Daffodil Judge. She grows and shows her own blooms, as well, carrying on the legacy of her parents, the late Gale and Lockwood Frizzell of Charlottesville. She also enjoys traveling with Leebo, painting, trail riding with friends, knitting, needlepoint, tending to her menagerie of horses, dogs, chickens, donkeys, and cats, and spending time with her three children, Beezie, Lee, and Lockwood, her son-in-law, Hanley, and her seven grandchildren, Hanley IV, Mac, Mamie, Leeboy, Posy, Margaret Dabney, and Cooper.
Beezie attends both sessions each summer with her five children, several of whom are current campers. During the school year, she and her husband, Hanley, live in Houston, TX, where Hanley works in finance, and the children attend River Oaks Baptist School, The House at Pooh Corner Preschool, and Bethany Christian School.
A lover of all things family, Camp, Virginia, and horses, Beezie and her family take every possible opportunity to make the trek “home.” When Camp is in session, she heads up the meal-planning and food-ordering, working with the camp cooks to create healthy and delicious meals that keep our campers running strong. Often behind-the-scenes tending to her children and her camp duties, she can be found answering the phone, applying bandaids, washing “accident” sheets, and enjoying every moment with her Maxwelton brothers and Lachlan sisters.
Beezie graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria, VA, (‘01) and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville (‘05). A lifelong horsewoman, like her mother, Beezie enjoys spending time helping at the barn, when time permits. She also enjoys writing, reading, tutoring her children, sewing, skiing, fishing, and hunting, especially with her beloved in-laws, Lindy and Hanley Sayers of Jackson Hole, WY.
Her husband, Hanley, a native of Nashville, TN, graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy (‘97), Washington and Lee University (‘01), and the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas (‘10). A lifelong outdoor enthusiast, Hanley loves spending as much time at Camp as work permits, and often makes several trips back and forth each summer. When time allows, he loves to hunt, fly fish, ski, read, and coach his boys’ football teams.
Lee attends both sessions each summer with his two children, Lee IV and Margaret Dabney. During the school year, they live in Bellair in Charlottesville, VA, where the children attend St. Mark Lutheran Preschool and Lee works for Wiley Real Estate.
A lover of all things Camp and outdoors, and a natural leader, Lee oversees much of the daily program at Maxwelton, alongside Leebo. He can be found organizing and advising counselors, keeping up with farm maintenance, helping with office work, editing counselor letters, and tending to his real estate clients in his “free” moments.
Lee is a graduate of Episcopal High School (2003), where he was Head Monitor, Washington and Lee University (2007), the Curry School of Education at UVA, and the Darden School of Business at UVA.
When he isn’t working at Camp or showing property, Lee loves to hunt, fish, ride, garden, and explore the Shenandoah Valley with his family.
Lockwood grew up at Camp with his siblings, and he spends as much time at Camp as possible all summer and all year. He lives nearby in a historic chapel, which he has beautifully restored and updated. A graduate of RCHS and Virginia Commonwealth University (‘13, BFA Film and Photography), Lockwood truly appreciates the beauty of Camp and the Virginia countryside and wildlife. An avid photographer and lifelong artist, Lockwood currently works for VMI in Lexington as a photographer and writer. He also spends most weekends working at horse shows up and down the east coast photographing high-level equestrian events with the renowned Brant Gamma. Lockwood is highly-respected within his field of work, and we are lucky to have him as our Camp photographer!
Lockwood spends hundreds of man hours a year mowing, fixing, weedeating, bushhogging, trail clearing, barn cleaning, and generally tending to Maxwelton Farm. He makes the trails like a national park, keeps the grass maintained, and checks on our Camp ponies and their fences, and he does it all for the love of Camp. An extraordinary example of humility, gentleness, empathy, kindness, joy, and insane work ethic, Lockwood can be found keeping everything from our cars to our computers running strong.
